Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
