The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
